Römische Elegien - J.W. Nelleke (voice, piano)

Goethe’s Roman Elegies stand as a remarkable tribute to classical poetry, featuring the deliberate alternation of hexameters and pentameters characteristic of the elegiac form. However, unlike traditional elegies which convey sorrow, Goethe’s work is infused with joy and exuberance, celebrating love with a hint of eroticism. Inspired by Goethe’s classical influences, I too seek inspiration from my own ‘classical’ masters—the German Romantic lied composers. My aim is not to imitate but to express deep affection for their artistry. Through my writing, I endeavor to capture the same vibrant emotions that define both Goethe’s verses and the rich tradition of Romantic lieder, creating a work that resonates with passion and celebrates love in all its myriad forms.
